The population of the Far Eastern leopard has almost quadrupled since the early 2000s. And today the number of individuals of this rarest large cat in the world has reached 113. EcoTourism Expert was informed about this by ANO National Priorities.
“In the early 2000s. the number of these animals did not exceed 30 individuals, and almost all of them lived in Russia,” the organization said.
To preserve the habitats of the animal in the Primorsky Territory, in 2012, the Land of the Leopard National Park and its protected zone were created, a project for creating a reserve population was developed, a complex of scientific research was carried out, and monitoring of the number of these cats was established.
“Thanks to the creation of the national park, it was possible to protect 80% of the range of the Far Eastern leopard, and today there are already 113 registered leopards on its territory,” the ANO National Priorities reported.
They recalled that by 2024, with the support of the World Wildlife Fund WWF Russia, it is planned to open a Center for the reintroduction of the Far Eastern leopard in the Lazovsky Nature Reserve.
“The cubs born in the center, raised and prepared for life in their natural habitat, will be released on the territory of the reserve,” the organization said.
The Far Eastern leopard is the northernmost leopard subspecies and the rarest large cat on the planet. It is included in the Red Book of Russia and the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
