Norilsk Nickel's environmental projects have won three nominations in the competition "The Best ESG Projects in Russia" in 2024.
In the nomination "Responsible consumption and production", the company's project "Environmental monitoring by unmanned aerial vehicles" won.
"Our environmental monitoring program using unmanned aerial vehicles has been highly appreciated for effective environmental impact management. Norilsk Nickel drones with the names "Dragonfly" and "Ecologist" are already monitoring not only above ground, but also underwater, providing comprehensive environmental control. These drones are equipped with multispectral and infrared cameras, which allows us to collect accurate data on natural ecosystems," the Norilsk Nickel press service said in a comment.
In the nomination "Conservation of terrestrial ecosystems", the company's project "Site about Biodiversity" was recognized as the best. "It provides information about the flora and fauna of the regions where Norilsk Nickel operates, the specifics of impacts and Norilsk Nickel's nature conservation projects," the release says.
Finally, in the nomination "Combating climate change", the competition jury awarded the victory to the project "Absorption of greenhouse gases by tailings dumps".
"This innovative project is aimed at absorbing greenhouse gases during the mineralization of tailings and reducing the carbon footprint in the production of Norilsk Nickel products. Now the company is evaluating the potential of each tailings storage facility, which in the future can help reduce the carbon footprint of production and achieve carbon neutrality," the press service said.
