Dagestan is preparing a project to restore the ecosystem of the Agrakhan Bay of the Caspian Sea. Solving this environmental problem is one of the three key tasks of the comprehensive action plan in the republic until 2025. This was reported by the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia on its website.

“In recent decades, the area of the bay has been steadily declining: the shores are overgrown with aquatic plants, the bottom is silted with river sediments, and the drop in the level of the Caspian also affects. The unique territory is a habitat for rare species of birds and animals, valuable and rare species of Caspian fish. During migration and wintering, tens of thousands of waterfowl and near-water birds stop there,” the ministry said.

For two and a half years, scientists have been assessing the state of the Agrakhansky Gulf, establishing the reasons for its degradation, and developing recommendations for restoring the unique ecosystem.

Rosvodresursy provided 23.7 million rubles for the development of design and estimate documentation in 2022 and 2023. When designing, the results of research work are used. It is planned that measures to restore the ecosystem of the bay in Dagestan will be held on an area of 150 hectares.

According to Rosvodresursi, a whole range of anti-flood and environmental measures has been developed for the region.

“In addition to saving the unique ecosystem of the Agrakhan Bay, the plans for the next three years include flood protection and regulation of the Terek riverbed, as well as water supply to the Arakum and Nizhne-Terek reservoirs through the Federal Agency for Fishery,” said Natalia Sologub, deputy head of this department, whose words are quoted in the message.

These works will make it possible to protect the inhabitants of Dagestan from intense floods in the lower reaches of the Terek, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources.
