Madrid to Ban Electric Scooters

The Madrid City Hall is revoking the licenses of companies that rent out electric scooters. According to the city's mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, three companies that were allowed to offer their services through the Uber mobile application a year ago have failed to ensure the safety of pedestrians in the Spanish capital.

Since 2023, strict rules for using electric scooters have been introduced in Madrid. Designated zones for riding and parking scooters were established, and each company responsible for renting them was allowed to operate 2,000 devices.

However, it has become clear during the course of operations that the requirements set by the city hall to ensure the highest level of safety for citizens are unrealistic in a metropolitan area. All licensed operators were unable to impose restrictions on the movement of their customers around the city and to control their parking.

As a result, the Madrid administration will prohibit these companies from providing electric scooter rental services starting in October. The city hall does not plan to issue licenses for this type of activity to other operators.
