Three southern regions of the country - Geumsan-gun, Gunsan, Changnyeong - experienced some of the heaviest rains in history. On Wednesday alone, 131.7 mm of precipitation fell in the city of Gunsan in just one hour, which is over 10% of the average annual rainfall in the region.

"Rainfall of this magnitude has been observed once every 200 years," a spokesperson for the meteorological agency of South Korea told the Yonhap news agency.

Heavy rains have caused damage to property, roads and infrastructure. Landslides are threatening in 50 regions, which led to the evacuation of more than 3,500 people from dangerous areas.

Local television shows images of flooded rivers and submerged roads. At least four people have died as a result of the disaster.
