Bosnia and Herzegovina has successfully registered its local kebab, ćevapčići, as an indigenous brand. To celebrate this achievement, a massive ćevapčići tasting event was held in Sarajevo. 3,000 servings of this meat delicacy were prepared in the capital's central square.
"If you come to Sarajevo and don't try ćevapčići, you can't leave the city," proclaimed the Mayor of Sarajevo, Benjamina Karić, inviting everyone to taste the famous Bosnian dish.
The process of certifying ćevapčići as a special traditional product of Bosnia and Herzegovina took two years. According to Karić, after protecting ćevapčići, the next step will be to have it recognized as a special Bosnian product within the EU.
The Director of the Food Safety Agency, Džemil Hajrić, added that the ćevapčići brand is the "crowning achievement" of efforts to harmonize the legislation of Bosnia and Herzegovina with the EU. "As a result of this process, the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina adopted a legal framework that allowed us to start working on the labeling of geographical origin and traditional reputation of food products," said Hajrić.
At a press conference held at the City Hall regarding the ćevapčići brand, the Mayor of Sarajevo emphasized that the city is "proud of its history, Olympic spirit, and gastronomic offerings, which attract a large number of tourists." Inspired by the international recognition of ćevapčići, Benjamina Karić announced a new initiative: the Sarajevo administration will now focus on certifying the Bosnian flatbread, somun, as a brand.
