The press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources announced the results of a meeting of the experts' section for the conservation and restoration of bison, part of the working group on the preservation and restoration of certain rare and endangered animal species in Russia. During the event, specialists discussed the plan for relocating bison from nurseries by the end of 2024.

Specifically, six bison from the Oka Reserve nursery in the Ryazan region will soon join a wild population in the Smolenskoe Poozerye National Park. Ten more bison will be transferred from the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve nursery to the Ust-Kuben hunting economy in the Vologda region.

These releases are part of the strategy for bison conservation in Russia. Last year, 14 bison were released from nurseries and successfully adapted to their natural habitat. The total number of wild bison in the country currently exceeds 2,000 individuals.

One of the strategy's goals is to increase the population of wild bison in the country to 2,750 individuals. A priority is the formation of four populations: Middle Russian, Central Caucasian, Vladimir, and Northern European.
