While rock climbing is not a new sport for Abkhazia, with the first world championship held in the Yupshar Canyon in the early 1970s, this sport is currently not well developed in the republic.

"We are taking our first steps. We don't have many routes yet. Four routes are located at the confluence of the Gega and Bzyb rivers, and four more with top belay in another location. All routes are of different levels of difficulty and different heights - up to 25 meters. In the future, the height of the routes will increase," said Timur Tvanba, senior researcher at the RRNSP for snow and avalanche monitoring and head of the Federation of Mountaineering and Rock Climbing of Abkhazia.

The development of rock climbing in the republic has great potential - almost 80% of the territory of Abkhazia consists of mountains and massifs. The plans include popularizing this sport, which will make it possible to revive the Soviet mountaineering routes. Locations for a climbing wall in Gudauta and Sukhum are already being considered.
