Israeli company Plastic Back has announced that it has found an effective way to recycle plastic waste. This innovative low-temperature method allows for the conversion of recycled materials into crude oil.

By 2028, the Tel Aviv-based company plans to recycle 100,000 tons of plastic, focusing primarily on polyvinyl chloride (PVC). According to the company, PVC is the third most widely used polymer in the world, with an annual production volume of 40 million tons.

The company assures that its low-temperature chemical approach addresses complex waste streams that cannot be processed by conventional mechanical and chemical methods. By breaking down plastic polymers into shorter liquid fractions, the materials can be recycled into new plastics and other everyday products. The solution can also be used to process HDPE, LDPE, multilayer, mixed, and contaminated plastics.

The processing occurs at a temperature of 100°C, which represents a significant improvement in energy efficiency compared to competing methods that require temperatures of 500°C to 1200°C.

Currently, the company’s 10-liter laboratory reactor processes 3 kg of plastic per cycle. A pilot facility is planned to be built in 2025 to recycle 50 tons of plastic per year.
