The Greek meteorological service "Meteo" has recorded a record increase in sea water temperature. After 30 years of studying the Mediterranean Sea, scientists have concluded that the surface water temperature has risen by 1.5 degrees Celsius.
However, in some regions, the increase is even more significant. For example, in the Ionian Sea, near the islands of Crete and Rhodes, as well as in the Thrace region, the water has become 2 degrees warmer.
While beach lovers have enjoyed this trend, marine life is facing an existential threat due to these changes in the ecosystem. Dead zones, completely devoid of marine flora and fauna, have already appeared in some coastal areas of Greece. This is due to the decrease in oxygen levels in the water and, consequently, the lack of necessary food for many fish species.
Greek fishermen are concerned about the future, as marine life may leave areas that have become unsuitable for their survival. Sardines, for example, are already migrating to cooler waters.
According to forecasts from the European service "Copernicus," the trend of rising sea surface temperatures is expected to continue in the coming years.
