Sweden's Gothenburg, along with Spain's Malaga, has been named the European capital of sustainable tourism in 2020.
A total of 35 cities from 17 member countries of the European Union participated in the competition for the best cultural and creative criteria for sustainability, accessibility and digital transition, organized by the European Commission.
Located on the west coast of Sweden, Gothenburg had received the highest experts ratings, in particular, due to its significant achievements in ensuring environmental sustainability.
The city's hotel infrastructure is 95% eco-label certified, and 95% of public transport is powered by renewable energy sources. In Gothenburg, there are more and more charging stations for electric vehicles, green spaces are expanding and rainwater recirculation systems are operating.
In turn, Gothenburg airport meets the highest standards of certification for carbon dioxide emissions.
