E-buses may cost Berlin 3 billion euros

The only way BVG can launch all its e-buses is by investing more money, employing more people and having new locations. The planned transition from diesel to e-buses in the coming years will cost the transport company almost 3 billion euros.

The report by the Traffic Council says: "So far, the ideas of both the BVG and the Council in the field of bus transport decarbonization are quite far apart …" According to the information provided by BVG, 2.94 billion euros will be allocated for the transition operation by 2035, which exceeds the current budget of the transport plan by 1.14 billion.

"The additional billion, which apparently comes from the state budget, must be well explained…,» says SPD financial expert Sven Heinemann.

“For diesel buses a full tank can last up to 400 kilometers of way. Thus, for electric buses, which have a much shorter range, the lines must be shortened. This means that we need more drivers,” said BVG spokeswoman Petra Nelken.

In addition, staff is required for the new depots. Heinemann said: “We have previously assumed that the maintenance of an electric motor is cheaper than that of a diesel engine.”

At present there are 30 E-buses employed by the BVG, which are gradually being used on the lines 300, 142, 347, 359 and N50. The costs have doubled in comparison to diesel busses (500,000 euros). In addition, the federal government (40%) and the state of Berlin (60%) will provide for any additional losses.

Heinemann: «We probably have to think outside the system when it comes to purchasing e-buses. Obviously, we need cooperation not only at the national but also at the European level. Moreover, mass production of e-buses is also generally becoming more interesting for the industry.»
