The Chersky National Park was created in December 2022 to protect the undisturbed natural complexes of the upper reaches of the Kolyma River, the southern spurs of the Chersky Range and to preserve the unique lake and river complexes of Lake Jack London, Momontai and Urultun, as well as the Omulevka River.

In 2023, the management of the national park was transferred to the Magadansky State Reserve.

The press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources reported that the development of a new specially protected natural area is planned to begin with the Jack London Lake cluster, one of the most interesting natural sites in the country. According to one version, the researchers who discovered this lake found Jack London's book "Martin Eden" on its shore. According to another version, the idea to name one of the geographical objects of Kolyma after Jack London was originally expressed by the head of the first geological expedition to Kolyma, Yuri Bilibin. Having learned about this idea, the geologist Pyotr Skornyakov, who worked in the lake area in 1932, gave him the name of Jack London.

According to experts, "Jack London Lake" can not only attract many tourists, but also become a hallmark of the Magadan region. In addition, on the basis of the national park "Chersky" it is planned to carry out activities in the field of environmental education and upbringing.

"The territory of the national park has great potential for the development of various areas of tourism in the Magadan region: educational, ecological, paleontological, archaeological, historical, fishing, as well as the creation of various routes - hiking, water, mountain, snowmobile and all-terrain vehicles and others," the Ministry of Natural Resources said. .

The area of the national park is 749 thousand hectares. Scientists on its territory will be able to study natural landscapes and existing ecosystems, local flora and fauna, archaeological sites and the historical center for the development of the culture of the indigenous peoples of the North.
