Bulgarian Ski Resort Transforms into a Summer Destination

The ski resort of Bansko in southwestern Bulgaria is becoming an increasingly popular summer destination. The past winter season was poor in terms of snowfall: most of the ski slopes had to be treated with fine-spraying machines. While skiers slid down the slopes on artificial snow, the town itself enjoyed clean sidewalks and green lawns.

Locals nostalgically recall times when snow covered the streets of Bansko from early autumn until late spring.Meteorologists also note a noticeable warming in the Pirin Mountains. And the summer of 2024 has broken all records:heat and drought have been plaguing the Balkans for the third month in a row.

The mountain resort of Bansko is no exception: daytime temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius were established here in June and have persisted to this day. However, the location at an altitude of 925 meters above sea level still has an impact:at night, the thermometer drops to 18-19 degrees in the city. And if you climb a few hundred meters higher into the mountains, you can escape the sweltering heat even during the day: at the upper lift stations at noon, the air does not warm up above 20-23 degrees.

Therefore, this summer, Bansko is filled with tourists almost as much as in the peak winter season. In addition to leisurely walks in the mountains, you can go cycling, trekking, climb to mountain lakes and peaks. The public is also attracted by the opportunity to relax in the mineral springs located near Bansko. And in the evenings, musical performances and folk festivals are held on the town square. It seems that the resort administration is increasingly focusing on attracting tourists in the summer period. And this policy is paying off. At least, this summer.
