A virtual tour of the ancient Strashnaya Cave, located in the Krasnoshchekovsky district of the Altai Territory, is now available on the "3D Archaeology" website (a project of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences). This was reported on the website of the regional Department of Tourism Development.
The estimated age of the cave is over 50 thousand years.
"The natural site is located on the left bank of the Inya River at the confluence of the Strashny stream, from which it got its name. Currently, it is difficult to get inside the cave, but thousands of years ago the entrance was significantly lower, and it served as a convenient temporary parking place for ancient people - Denisovans, Neanderthals, and people of modern anatomical appearance. They left behind numerous stone and bone tools. In addition, many animal bones were found here, both brought by humans and those that got there naturally," the message says.
Today, the cave and the surrounding area belong to the Tigireksky Nature Reserve and are under special protection.
