At least 65 long-finned pilot whales have died as a result of a mass stranding on the coast of northern Scotland.
This tragedy has become one of the largest in the UK in recent years.Rescuers who arrived at the scene found 77 long-finned pilot whales on the beach, which had been there for several hours.
Only 12 of them were alive and were close to the water.Scientists still don't know the exact answer to the question of why whales and dolphins get stranded on the beach. According to experts, such cases have been recorded throughout history. Whales can become stranded on the beach if they lose their way or get caught in a tide trap, but there is no single final answer to why this phenomenon occurs.
Pilot whales are known for their strong social bonds, and when one member of the pod gets into trouble, others often follow, leading to mass strandings.
Similar incidents have occurred in the past. For instance, last year, 55 whales died or were euthanized following a mass stranding on the Scottish island of Lewis, which is located to the west of the mainland. Additionally, at the beginning of this year, a mass whale death occurred in Western Australia.
