Venice and its lagoon were not included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites under threat. This decision was taken by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

At the same time, its members demanded that the Italian authorities provide by December 2022 updated information on measures taken to protect the ecosystem of Venice from excessive tourism and prevent the loss of the city's population.

In order to avoid the inclusion of Venice in the UNESCO "black list", the Italian government decided to introduce a ban on the movement of cruise ships with a displacement of more than 25,000 on the water channels of Venice passing by the Cathedral of San Marco and the Doge's Palace from August 1.

Mass tourism in Venice peaked in 2019, when the world-famous city on the water was visited by about 25 million tourists. At the same time, the death rate in Venice, whose population has a little more than 50,000 inhabitants, is about one thousand people a year.
