Over the past 5 years, more than 1.5 thousand landfills with an area of 48 hectares have been eliminated in the Murmansk Oblast, discharges of untreated wastewater have been reduced by 60%, and with the participation of volunteers, the coastline with a total length of more than 220 km has been cleaned up. Sulfur dioxide emissions by the Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company have been reduced by 6 times - to 12 thousand tons. The forest has been restored on an area of 7 thousand hectares. All this, according to the results of 2023, provided the Murmansk Oblast with the third place in the national environmental rating.
This was announced by Senator from the Murmansk Oblast Tatyana Sakharova following the First Regional Ecological Forum held in Murmansk. It was also said there that a significant reduction in emissions from the Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company (Nornickel Group) became possible due to a deep modernization of production.
The Murmansk Oblast leadership associates a further reduction in emissions from industrial enterprises with the implementation of the regional gasification project in the next 5 years.
The forum also discussed the development of tourism in specially protected natural areas of the North, taking into account the peculiarities of nature and climatic conditions. It was noted that despite the objective difficulties, the task of the authorities is to create comfortable conditions for tourists so that they can come to the Arctic without destroying the fragile biobalance. In addition to a well-thought-out tourist infrastructure, environmental education and volunteer actions will play a large role in this.
Tatyana Sakharova did not rule out that next year this environmental forum will become interregional - with the participation of representatives of all Arctic regions of Russia. This year the forum was attended by large industrial enterprises operating in the region - PJSC MMC Norilsk Nickel, JSC Kola MMC, JSC MCC EuroChem, Murmansk branch of AtomEnergoSbyt JSC and JSC Severstal, as well as the scientific community, the education sphere, and volunteer organizations.
