The Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation has prepared a draft order that will approve a new list of flora objects listed in the Red Book of Russia. The agency announced this on its website.

The latest version of the list of Red Book plants dates back to 2005.

“102 species from the new edition will be excluded. Including because their numbers have recovered and they are no longer endangered species. But, unfortunately, there are still a sufficient number of plants that need protection. For the first time, scientists proposed to include 165 new species in the Red Book. As a result, 739 vascular plants, bryophytes, fungi, lichens and algae will be protected,” said Alexander Kozlov, head of the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources, whose words are quoted in the message.

The list is approved by the Commission on Rare and Endangered Animals, Plants and Fungi.

It has seven sections: angiosperms and gymnosperms, ferns, bryophytes, algae, lichens and fungi. All of them are divided into orders, families, divisions and classes. The largest family is the orchid angiosperms. They are listed in the Red Book of 62 species.

But for the publication of the book to approve the list is not enough. The commission has yet to determine the structure, composition of essays, determine the parameters of illustrations, appoint executive editors of the publication, editors of sections, and much more, the ministry explained.

“The preparation and publication of an updated edition of the Red Book “Objects of the Flora” is scheduled for 2023-2024,” the report says.
