2019 saw the number of nights spent in EU tourist accommodation facilities increase by 2.4 percent to more than 3.2 billion compared to 2018, according Eurostat preliminary data.
The top five of the EU most popular among tourists countries include Spain (469 million overnight stops, + 0.5% by 2018), France (446 million, +0.8%), Germany (436 million, +4.0%), Italy (433 million, +0.9%) and the United Kingdom (375 million, +5.7%).
Last year, the number of overnight tourist stops increased in almost all EU States, with the largest increases in Slovakia (+12.6%) and Lithuania (+10.0%). They are followed by the Netherlands (+6.8%), the UK (+5.7%) and Romania (+5.6%).
On the contrary, the decline was observed in Greece (-3.0%) and in Malta (-2.7%), according to Eurostat data.
