The press service of the Kuril Reserve reported that due to storms, floods and marine debris emissions, the mouths of many Kunashir watercourses outside the protected area have become impassable for spawning fish. The security department of the institution called on fishing organizations engaged in salmon production in the South Kuril region to conduct actions to clear the channels.
There are many rivers, lakes and streams on the island, into which pink salmon, chum salmon and kunja come to spawn. Due to typhoons and storms, river mouths and lake channels are often cluttered with pebbles, dead trees and marine debris. Reservoirs and watercourses are cut off from the sea for the passage of fish.As a result, the fish cannot pass to spawn.
On the territory of the Kurilsky Nature Reserve and its security zone, employees themselves carry out the clearing of estuarine sections of watercourses. But their capabilities are limited both due to material and human resources.
The reserve offers fishing organizations to revive the tradition of "patronage" over spawning watercourses near their fishing sites. In particular, fishermen are asked to go by boat along the Okhotsk coast of Kunashir from Lake Lagunnoye to the Severyanka River and clear at least a few river mouths and channels.
Such an action is needed by the lakes of Valentina and Mikhailovskoye, whose channels between the lake and the sea are currently clogged with sand, pebbles and blockages of logs. The mouths of spawning rivers and streams are in the same position: Secretive, Triple and others.
