The Acropolis of Athens closed during the daytime due to the "boiling" heat

The iconic historical monument andthe most visited place in Greece -the Acropolis of Athens - was twiceforcibly closed to the public duringdaytime hours this week due to theunbearable heat.

According to local media, in someregions of the country, includingAttica, where Athens is located, the air temperature has exceeded 40degrees Celsius for more than tendays.

To get to the sacred rock on whichthe Acropolis stands, you need to walk a short but steep path, whichcan be extremely difficult for sometourists in extreme heat.

In order to avoid accidents,employees of the Greek branch of the Red Cross distributed bottles offresh water to travelers for free.

In mid-June, the Athenianauthorities, due to an early heatwave, had already temporarilyclosed visits to the Acropolis for twodays during the hottest hours.

In 2023, one of the most grandioseand majestic buildings of AncientGreece was visited by a recordnumber of tourists - about 4 million.
