The official website of the Kamchatka Territory reported that employees of local forestries this year plan to collect more than 200 kg of seeds of stone birch for reforestation work on the peninsula.
"Specialists of the Kamchatskiye Lesnichestvo KSCU conducted phenological observations in forest plantations of stone birch and positively assessed the expected harvest of seeds of forest plants in 2023. Seed collection will take place on the territory of the cutting areas of the Elizovsky and Ust-Bolsheretsky forestries in September," the report says.
The collection will take place from the areas intended for cutting trees, 15 days before the seed shedding. Birch "earrings" will be dried in well-ventilated areas, cleaned of leaves, twigs and rods. Then the seeds are sifted through special sieves. After that, the harvested seeds will be sent to the forest seed station for certification and subsequent use.
Experts note that the stock of forest seeds is necessary for reforestation in areas of cut down and dead forest plantations. Seedlings are grown from them, which are subsequently planted in the soil.
