Sarajevo is becoming the tourist capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The influx of foreign guests visiting the Sarajevo canton in June of this year increased by 58.7% compared to June 2023. The largest number of tourists comes from the UK, Germany, China, the UAE, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey, and Croatia.
Trips from neighboring Balkan countries are primarily made via high-quality mountain routes. However, to attract guests from more distant regions, the Tourism Council and the government of the canton have decided to co-finance air travel on 30 new routes with budget airlines Ryanair, SunExpress, and TUI Airways in collaboration with Sarajevo International Airport.
The city and the municipalities united with it in one canton account for one-third of the GDP of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Almost 10% of this comes from tourism-related profits. These results have been made possible due to investments in the development of the hospitality sector and a diverse entertainment program offered to tourists. Highlights include the renowned Sarajevo Film Festival, various musical celebrations, interesting museum collections, and regularly updated exhibition displays. Additionally, a good balance of price and quality plays a significant role in attracting visitors.
