A citizen of the Russian Federation, hiding from customs and border control, planned to take two lion cubs and two Bengal tigers about a month old from Astrakhan to Kazakhstan through the Karaozek checkpoint on the border of the Russian Federation. He did not have the necessary CITES permit (certificate). This was reported on the website of Rosprirodnadzor.
“Of the documents, only passports issued “on the knee” without any information about the identification of rare predators were presented to the customs authorities. Customs officers, in accordance with the established procedure, conducted procedural checks in order to initiate a criminal case in connection with an attempted illegal export.
The customs officers turned to Rosprirodnadzor to place the cubs and cubs in proper conditions as soon as possible, provide them with food and veterinary care before a decision is made on confiscation and their future fate.
Veterinarians and employees of the Astrakhan zoo "Baba Frosya" arrived at the customs point, contacted by inspectors from Rosprirodnadzor and asked to provide the animals with all the necessary assistance.
According to experts, lion cubs and cubs need to be vaccinated according to age and additional examinations should be carried out, but there is no threat to their lives. “All animals will be placed in the Baba Frosya Zoo until a final decision on their fate is made. Rosprirodnadzor, for its part, will provide the necessary assistance in their examination, vaccination and food supply. We are keeping the situation under control,” the ministry said.
