The Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources (Rosprirodnadzor) has announced the start of the traditional "Eco-Tree" campaign. Participants will give a second life to unwanted items by creating New Year decorations from used plastic. Submissions are accepted from October 1 to December 1, and the best creations will adorn the country's main eco-tree.
"In 2023, the nationwide campaign collected over 5,000 eco-friendly New Year decorations from across the country. Authors crafted ornaments from discarded items, trash, old CDs, plastic bottles, polyethylene, disposable tableware, broken buttons, demonstrating that recycling not only reduces environmental harm but can also bring joy," states the message on the Rosprirodnadzor website.
Anyone can participate in the campaign. Participants need to create a New Year decoration from plastic by hand and send it to the following address: 119017, Moscow, Bolshaya Ordynka St., 29, building 1, marked "Eco-Tree," until further notice.
In addition to the eco-decoration, participants should include a sheet of paper with their full name, city, contact phone number, or email address written in block letters.
"The evaluation will consider the idea, appearance, and complexity of the item. However, the main goal is to prevent mountains of plastic from ending up in landfills, while children and adults spend quality time together creating original decorations by hand. The creativity, warmth, and care put into making these decorations will bring a truly kind and festive spirit. Additionally, working on these ornaments in a playful manner sends an important message to the younger generation about caring for nature and learning to be environmentally responsible," noted Rosprirodnadzor.
The most worthy creations will decorate the main eco-tree of the country, which will traditionally be opened in December at the Moscow Zoo. The authors will also receive prizes and gifts.
"Last year, we received an incredible response from all over Russia for the 'Eco-Tree' campaign. We were literally overwhelmed with decorations. These were amazing crafts created with creativity and heartfelt warmth. I hope this time we will see new ideas and concepts for transforming harmful plastic into something magical," said the head of the agency, Svetlana Radionova, as quoted in the announcement.
