On October 1st, Greece, like the rest of the world, celebrated Coffee Day. However, Greeks are concerned about the sharp rise in prices for this popular beverage. The cost of espresso capsules has approached 7 euros, while ground coffee is nearing 6 euros per pack. In a country where coffee consumption is a daily ritual, this is causing significant public distress.
Café owners are trying to keep prices stable, but this is becoming increasingly difficult. The price of coffee beans on the stock market has risen by 50%, and there is a 24% tax on a cup of coffee in Greece. As a result, customers are being offered coffee in cardboard cups more frequently, which disappoints true connoisseurs of this aromatic drink.
However, enterprising baristas have found a way to lift the spirits of coffee lovers. Coffee cocktails with added alcohol have become popular. For example, the "Cafe Negroni" includes coffee, vermouth, gin, and Campari. In the "Espresso Martini," liqueur and vodka blend perfectly with espresso. An increasing number of cocktails feature coffee combined with Cuban rum or German schnapps.
The popularity of these drinks may be due not only to their taste but also to the fact that alcohol prices in Greece remain stable, while coffee prices are likely to continue rising this year and next.
