The official portal "Wild Nature of Russia" has reported on the results of a full-scale snow leopard census. The specialists received optimistic data. According to the study, the number of registered snow leopards increased from 75 to 87.
This year, all regions where the predator's habitat is located took part in the census. In the Altai Republic, 54 individuals were recorded, in Tyva - 15, in Buryatia - 7, in the Krasnoyarsk Territory - 11.
The report notes that even ten years ago there was only talk of single encounters with these rare predators. According to experts, the development of new protected areas, measures to combat poaching and the attention of the head of state have made it possible to preserve the population.
Thus, a stable group of snow leopards was formed in the Argut River basin in the Altai Republic, where the Saylyugemsky National Park was established in 2013. Previously, the snow leopard had practically disappeared from these places. Now 23 individuals have been registered there, including four females with cubs.
