According to the deputy director for scientific work of the Sochi National Park, Boris Tuniyev, it is forbidden by law to apply chemicals in the territory of protected areas. Indigenous mushrooms that kill boxwood moths were found in the Agursky Gorge of Sochi. On the basis of particularly aggressive strains, a special suspension was developed, which is used now to treat new boxwood plantings.
Boris Tuniyev emphasized that today a program to restore boxwood in Sochi National Park is underway. In a special nursery 30 thousand seedlings of a relic plant are being grown. They were obtained from collecting surviving seeds. This year, 20 thousand redbook plants will be returned to the wild. Trees will be constantly treated with a suspension of mushrooms. Suspension concentrate has an almost instant effect. After eating the treated leaf, the caterpillar's digestive tract is affected and it dies.
As the director of scientific work of the Sochi National Park Boris Tuniyev explained, nature itself provided great support to the scientists - natural regeneration began in many boxwood groves, although this was previously considered impossible. The boxwood recovery program in the Sochi National Park is designed for 10 years.
A harmful insect eating boxwood was brought to Sochi along with planting material for the 2014 Winter Olympics. As a result, more than 90 percent of all plants died. Of more than two thousand hectares of boxwood, only about 50 were saved.
