The press service of the Altai Biosphere Reserve has announced a significant discovery: a black stork nest has been found in the upper part of Lake Teletskoye. This marks the first recorded instance of this species nesting within the reserve. The nestlings, found fully feathered, have since fledged.
The black stork is listed as vulnerable in both the Russian Red List and the Red List of the Altai Republic. While previously spotted in the reserve, particularly around Lake Teletskoye, the Chulcha River basin, and the Julukulskaya depression, this is the first confirmed nesting. Earlier sightings include one in the mouth of the Oyer River in July 2019 and another near the town of Altyn-Tuu on the adjacent territory of Lake Teletskoye in July 2020.
Additionally, ornithologists conducted surveys of nesting waterfowl broods along the meridional section of the lake in August. Great crested grebes were the most abundant, while the least numerous were goldeneye and mallard broods. The first migrating hoopoes and garden buntings were also observed on the Yaylinskaya terrace, and the first migrating great cormorants were spotted on the lake.
