A new agreement between Perth Airport and Qantas will facilitate the resumption of the Australian airline's Perth (PER) to Johannesburg (JNB) flights as early as mid-2025.
Southern and East African Tourism Update reports quoted Qantas as saying that the introduction of additional international and domestic flights will greatly enhance Australia's tourism sector, hence inciting a multi-billion-dollar increase in investments.
In addition to the direct PER-JNB flights that SAA initiated on April 28, the flight is anticipated to provide an additional boost to incoming tourism from Australia.
The commercial agreement for Perth Airport covers the expansion of Terminals 3 and 4, which Qantas is currently running.
This expansion will increase capacity until the new facilities are operational in 2031.
The Perth direct flights to Jakarta and Johannesburg were previously suspended by Qantas due to a lack of capacity at terminals.
