In the Kalovica Canal near the Serbian village of Kotezhe, a massive death of birds is observed. The death of birds began in early September and continues to this day. Activists from the organization “Eco-Pancevački Rit” raised the alarm. To date, the death of all 8 swans that lived in the canal, as well as almost two dozen ducks, has been recorded. In addition to veterinarians and the police, the Republic Prosecutor's Office joined the investigation of the incident.
The initial version, related to the deliberate persecution of birds, was not confirmed. Although poisoned food was found near the birds' habitat, no traces of poison were found when the carcasses were opened.
Now the cause of death for waterfowl is considered to be a possible bird flu epidemic. To analyze the incident, the Institute of Public Health of Serbia took water samples, and also took samples of biomaterial from plants and birds. Environmental authorities are keeping the situation under control.
