From March 1, 2020, Luxembourg will be the first in the world to introduce free travel on public transport - buses, trams and commuter trains.
The innovation, which is expected to allow residents of the Grand Duchy to reduce the frequency of using personal vehicles and, as a result, will lead to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, applies not only to Luxembourgers, but also to foreigners.
The exception will be travel in the first class car of commuter trains, which will remain paid, EcoTourism Expert was told in the Ministry of mobility of Luxembourg.
At the same time, there will be a significant reduction in the cost of monthly travel tickets for electric trains connecting Luxembourg with the nearest localities in Belgium, France and Germany, whose citizens often work in Luxembourg. But this measure also does not apply to first-class travel.
The cost of the project is estimated by the Luxembourg authorities at 41 million euros per year.
The population of the Grand Duchy is a little more than 600 thousand people, of which 48% are foreigners.
