Five more rare birds of prey went to the state nature reserve of regional significance “Sestroretskoye swamp”. On International Earth Day, eared owls, listed in the Red Book of St. Petersburg, were returned to their natural habitat.
According to the press service of the St. Petersburg Environmental Management Committee, the nature reserve was chosen because the anthropogenic load is reduced here and it is possible to provide birds with protection. Owls who underwent rehabilitation at the Green Parrot Veterinary Hospital were kept in a special enclosure for 24 hours with food on the territory of the reserve, and then released into the wild.
The city authorities regularly organize events aimed at protecting and restoring the population of rare and endangered species of animals. In 2017, in the framework of the international campaign “The Hour of the Earth”, three eared owls that were taken from photographers and undergone rehabilitation, were released on the territory of the nature monument “Park Sergievka”. In 2018, a new eagle owl appeared in Sestroretsky Swamp. In 2019, two buzzards were released in the territory of the North Coast of the Neva Bay reserve.
