Kronotsky Nature Reserve together with the Far East Russia Orca Project conducted an expedition to study killer whales. The expedition ended today on Whale and Dolphin Day.
The goal of the expedition members was to find out how cetaceans use the water area of the reserve located north of the Kronotsky Peninsula.
“Until now, we have received all the scarce data on the inhabitants of these waters only in the course of short route counts.
We hope that the work of the Far East Russia Orca Project team will continue in the coming years, and we will be able to fill the gaps in information about cetaceans,” said Daria Panicheva, an employee of the reserve.
Killer whales are cetaceans from the dolphin family. There are two ecological types of killer whales in the waters of the northwestern Pacific Ocean: carnivorous and fish-eating. First of all, they differ in their food preferences. They are also distinguished by other features of biology - behavior, social structure, use of sounds.
