Eurostat: Tourism in the European Union collapsed by 61%

During the coronavirus pandemic, tourism in the European Union has collapsed by 61%.

According to the European statistical agency Eurostat, from April 2020 to March 2021, the number of overnight stops at tourist infrastructure facilities in the EU countries decreased by 61% compared to the 12 months preceding the pandemic.

The largest decrease in the number of tourist overnight stays was recorded in Malta (80%). It is followed by Spain and Greece, where this figure was 78% and 74%, respectively. In Portugal, the number of overnight stops decreased by 70%, in Hungary - by 66%.

From April 2020 to March 2021, compared to the previous 12 months, the number of overnight stays of international tourists in a number of EU states has sharply decreased. According to Eurostat, the decline in Spain reached 90%, in Romania - 89%, in Hungary and Finland - about 88%.
