The transition to a sustainable, green economy is a guarantee of a quick way out of the crisis and an increase in the quality of life in Russia, said the World Wide Fund (WWF) and UN Environment Patron for Polar Regions Vyacheslav Fetisov in their letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Attracting foreign investment is an important objective, as important as developing mechanisms for public-private partnership, raising the effectiveness of budget expenditures and involving private funds, reads the letter.
«Over the past two years Russia has substantially raised the priority of sustainable development and made significant steps toward a green economy, specifically, Russia joined the Paris climate agreement in September 2019,» it said.
The authors of the letter urge the president right now to direct the country's development towards a sustainable, green economy and ask him to entrust the government with the development of measures to support and develop green sectors of the economy and green financing mechanisms.
The measures referred to in the appeal relate in particular to the development of green public procurement, green bonds, energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. According to environmentalists, work in the indicated areas will help create conditions for careful nature management, and at the same time, in the medium term, maintain health, ensure the growth of people's well-being, create new jobs and increase the attractiveness of the Russian economy for foreign investors.
They also draw the attention of the country's leadership to the fact that in search of solutions to stabilize the situation, in addition to financial and fiscal proposals, opportunities to mitigate environmental requirements are put forward as business support measures.
