Bison cow Mnelopa from the Oka Nature Reserve gave birth to a calf on April 19 - it became the 500th bison calf born in the nursery since its foundation in 1959. The baby's father, Avmumin, arrived at the reserve from Sweden in 2017. This was reported by the portal "Wild Nature of Russia".
"The little bison was named Mehndi. Now the herd with the newborn is in a remote pen of the nursery with a good forage base," - the message says.
As noted in the reserve itself, the nickname for the baby was invented by Muscovite Varvara Ermakova, who became her official guardian under the "Adopt a Bison" program.
Such an original gift was made to Varvara by her grandfather for her birthday, having submitted an application to participate in the program back in the winter.
"Fate or coincidence, but on the eve of her granddaughter's birthday, our first calf this year was also born," - the message says on the website of the natural area.
The nursery of purebred Caucasian-Belovezhsky bison of the Oka Nature Reserve was created to replenish the wild population of this rare species. The date of its foundation is considered to be December 20, 1959, when the first bison - Muromts and Muza - were brought from the Prioksko-Terrasny Reserve.
At present, the animals are located on an area of 127.8 hectares.
