The Dubai Metro celebrated its 15th anniversary on September 9th. This milestone marks a significant advancement in the emirate's urban public transportation system. Since its inauguration in 2009, the metro has become a vital artery, connecting key districts of Dubai and providing safe and efficient transportation for passengers.
Over the past decade and a half, the Dubai Metro has experienced consistent growth in ridership, reaching approximately 2.4 billion passengers, according to emirate authorities. With an average daily ridership of around 730,000, the metro is now the preferred mode of transport for numerous residents and visitors to the metropolis. Since its inception, the Dubai Metro has facilitated 4.3 million journeys, covering 26.8 million kilometers.
In the past 15 years, the metro network has expanded significantly: the length of lines has increased from 52 to 90 kilometers, the number of stations has grown from 10 to 53, and the number of operational trains has increased from 79 to 129. While daily ridership in September 2009 did not exceed 20,000, it has now reached 767,000 passengers. On peak days and holidays, the metro accommodates up to 900,000 passengers daily. Despite this, the Dubai Metro remains the world's longest driverless metro project.
The Dubai Metro currently consists of two lines: the red and green lines, with a total of 49 stations. A project is currently underway (scheduled until 2040) to construct at least two more branches, including underground lines. Train operations are fully automated, but a manual mode can be activated if necessary. Each train consists of 5 carriages, divided into three classes: "gold," "women and children" (men are not allowed), and "silver." The first two classes are located in two isolated sections of the head or tail carriage, depending on the direction of travel. The remaining 4 carriages are "silver" level, meaning they are standard.
Passengers who mistakenly enter the "wrong" carriage may be fined, but tourists are usually forgiven and simply asked to change carriages at the next station. Eating, chewing gum, drinking, smoking, and carrying alcohol are prohibited on the Dubai Metro.
