Canadian Federal Transport Minister Mark Garneau announced that cruise ships carrying one hundred or more passengers will be banned from Canadian waters until November.
This measure will particularly affect Quebec city, the administrative center of the French-speaking province of Canada - Quebec, where 98% of all cruise ships stop.
In 2020 Quebec city planned to receive 152 vessels with about 250,000 tourists, and Montreal, the largest city in the province, - another 80 vessels with 139,000 travelers.
According to the port authority, passengers leave up to CAD 210 million annually in Quebec city alone.
The cruise industry employs 4,000-5,000 Quebecers, and the total revenue of the Quebec economy reaches CAD 1 billion, according to local media.
