The Norilsk Nickel company is ready to start construction of a new Tukhard settlement on the Taimyr Peninsula in the north of Krasnoyarsk Krai in 2024, after completing negotiations with the regional authorities on how large the hospital or school will be in the new settlement. This was announced at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum by the company's vice president Andrey Grachev.
The village of Tukhard arose spontaneously in the second half of the 20th century. Then, representatives of the indigenous peoples of the North settled in temporary housing for workers near the facilities of Norilskgazprom (a subsidiary of MMC Norilsk Nickel), due to its proximity to communications and amenities. The settlement ended up in the sanitary protection zone of the enterprise.
“Now we are at the stage of agreeing our plans for Tukhard with the Krasnoyarsk Territory government <…>. But we are discussing with them the question of whether it is worth building a huge school and hospital in Tukhard, or first study the needs of the village. In order not to build a school for a thousand places, where 20 people will study. So far, we will solve these two issues and, I think, in the near future, within a month, we will proceed to the main stage,” Grachev said.
According to him, the project has already gone through the procedures of free, prior and informed consent, which were applied by the company when determining the new location of the village.
Now, together with reindeer herders, about 1,000 people live in the village. There is a small school where children study from the first to the fourth grade. Children go to Dudinka to receive secondary general education. There is no management company in the village.
