The Calgary zoo is preparing to send two giant pandas home to China because of its inability to provide them with bamboo, which is the main type of food for these animals.
Global restrictions in the context of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic led to the cancellation of most flights between China and Canada.
Under these conditions, the Canadian zoo has almost run out of bamboo supplies and is unable to replenish them. Meanwhile, the proportion of plants in the diet of pandas is 99 %. They consume up to 40 kilograms of bamboo per day. There were also difficulties with its deliveries from California.
Pandas Er Shun and Da Mao were brought to Calgary in 2018 from the Toronto zoo, where they spent five years. In Calgary the bamboo bears had to stay until 2023.
The management of the zoo came to the conclusion that in the situation with the problem of providing animals with food, it would be better to send them back to their homeland. This issue is under discussion.
Meanwhile, according to media reports, the Chinese side was surprised by the decision of the management of the Calgary zoo, since other countries that host Chinese pandas successfully cultivate bamboo on their territory.
