A Bulgarian lawyer has launched a campaign against the Minister of Ecology, over concerns about air quality in the capital, Sofia. According to Minister Petar Dimitrov, who is responsible for the environment and water resources, air quality in Bulgaria, and especially in Sofia, is constantly improving. This assertion is supposedly backed up by data from monitoring devices installed at 48 points across the city.
However, lawyer Dimitar Ploshakov vehemently disagrees. He claims that the National Air Quality Monitoring System has been hacked and that data on environmental pollution is being deliberately distorted. Furthermore, the lawyer believes that air quality monitoring stations are located far from pollution sources. As a result, no action is being taken to clean the capital's air of fine particulate matter.
Dimitar Ploshakov attributes his daughters' bronchial asthma to this poor air quality. One of them nearly died during a severe asthma attack, and the other is forced to use an inhaler constantly.
"I want to tell the Minister of the Environment that he has met his worst nightmare in me. I will make half of Sofia and Plovdiv file lawsuits, I will inform every employee in Brussels about this case," threatened lawyer Dimitar Ploshakov.
Air quality problems in Bulgaria's major cities worsen with the onset of cold weather. Many residents are forced to use coal or even household waste to heat their homes. At the same time, the country's resorts attract numerous tourists precisely because of their crystal-clear air.
