A large-scale fire is raging on the Greek island of Evia, which is located just 70 km from Athens. Summer fires in the mountains are not uncommon in the Balkans. As a rule, starting from May, the weather here is dry, hot. But this year is not quite usual: all spring and early summer there were torrential rains. Therefore, the situation did not cause concern. However, the other day, an extensive fire engulfed an area near the village of Milaki in the Greek municipality of Kimi Aliveri. And it is not caused by weather disasters, but by bees.

A local elderly farmer tried to pacify the aggression of bees when extracting honey. But things turned into disaster. The fact is that to calm the insects, beekeepers fumigate beehives with the help of a smoker - a special device filled with smoldering wood shavings. One awkward movement - and now hectares of relict forest are already blazing.

More than 80 firefighters, 24 special vehicles and an aircraft were deployed to tame the fire on the island. There were fears that the fire would spread to a nearby cement plant and power plant. Fortunately, the direction of the wind allowed the fire to be contained and now nothing threatens these important local infrastructure facilities. But the forest still continues to burn in hard-to-reach places, so it will take time to completely extinguish the fire.

According to the head of the municipality, Kimi-Aliveri, firefighters will remain here until the fire is extinguished. The unwitting culprit of the fiery disaster is detained by the police.
