Angola’s tourism revenue fell to 9 billion kwanzas ($18.5 million) in the third quarter of 2019 from 12 billion kwanzas, a year earlier, according to data from the country’s ministry of tourism.
The number of tourists arriving in Angola has pointedly slowed due to the financial and economic crisis that the country has been experiencing since 2014.
The average number of tourists recorded over the last three years was 215,000 per annum, which compares with a target of 512,000 tourists per year set out in the National Development Plan.
The ministry’s director of statistical planning studies Mário Jacob Santos told Angop news agency that the country’s tourism revenue in 2020 will account for approximately 0.8% of Angola’s Gross Domestic Product.
The development of the tourism sector in Angola had also been affected in the past four year by the deceleration of the global economy, he said.
