The press service of the Russian Geographical Society reported that during a joint expedition with the Russian Ministry of Defense, a new island was discovered in the area of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. Experts saw him during the landing at Cape Zhelaniya.

The new island is located near the Rykachev glacier in Zayachiy Bay. It is just over a kilometer in diameter and is covered by a small glacier. The expedition members spotted a polar bear on the island. Hydrographers have already marked the new geographical feature on maps.

Now the hydrographic vessel "Romuald Muklevich" continues its journey along the western coast of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. The expedition members have already taken photographs of the places where a group of travelers led by Valerian Albanov, who left the schooner “St. Anna” trapped in ice, allegedly disappeared. After viewing the photos, perhaps more information about the polar explorers’ route will appear.

In addition, hydrographers measured and mapped the depths of the entrance to the previously unexplored Gray Bay, thereby removing another blank spot from the hydrographic map of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation.
