The press service of the Land of the Leopard National Park reported that 150 saplings of yew were planted in a tree nursery located on the territory of the Gamovsky site. This plant is listed in the Red Book of Russia and is found in our country only in the Far East.
The yew cuttings were harvested last autumn. They spent the winter in temporary containers at the Central Estate. Today, the size of one seedling is 5-7 cm. The root system has been successfully restored.
“The conditions of the nursery will help the seedlings to get stronger and prepare for planting in the wild nature of the national park. This will become part of the organization’s long-term work to restore the original appearance of the forests of southern Primorye, which serve as a home for the Far Eastern leopard, one of the rarest animals in the world,” the message says.
Small yews will be "neighbors" for other valuable species of Far Eastern trees. Seedlings of Korean cedar, the "breadfruit tree" of the Ussuri taiga, as well as dense-flowered pine, which is listed in the Red Book of Russia, are already growing in the nursery.
The forest in the south of Primorye was badly damaged by fire and an ax in the 20th century, which led to a reduction in the number of some tree species. This also affected the pointed yew. The age of this long-lived coniferous tree can reach more than 1000 years.
