The ratification of the Protocol on the Conservation of the Biodiversity of the Caspian Sea means that the protection of the marine environment of the Caspian Sea from pollution, including the conservation, restoration, sustainable and rational use of its biological resources, will be implemented jointly and in line with the principles and norms of international environmental law. This opinion was expressed by the co-chairman of the Ecological Chamber of Russia, member of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia Vadim Petrov.
“The ratification of the protocol by Kazakhstan, which was signed in May 2014 in Ashgabat, will give a new impetus to the convention itself. The signing means that the goal outlined in the convention in the form of preserving the diversity of living things, ecosystems, as well as preserving the sustainable use of marine resources, will intensify practical implementation and create new Caspian projects similar to the Caspian seal conservation project, "he added, commenting on the signing of the ratification by the President. Kazakhstan by Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
According to ecologists, today the Caspian Sea has lost its ability to purify itself - there are too many waste and pollutants on its shores and in the water area. That is, saving the Caspian is a matter of consent of the Caspian states on the issue of protection and remediation of the water area, immediate relief of the main sources of pollution. If we do not develop joint measures to clean up the water area, in a couple of decades the Caspian will completely lose its biodiversity and stop into a muddy slurry filled with sewage pollutants.
Russia and Kazakhstan have developed a draft joint action plan for the conservation of the Caspian seal population for 2021–2026.
