Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia decided to develop joint projects in the field of wine tourism. Despite the difficult history of relations, the Bulgarian Minister of Tourism Ilyin Dimitrov and the Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of North Macedonia to Bulgaria Agnessa Rusi Popovska are sure that it is winemaking that is the point of contact between both countries. Indeed, even in ancient Thracian times, these regions became famous for the invigorating drink, sung by Homer himself.
Today, in addition to common grape varieties, endemics grow in Bulgaria and North Macedonia, on which local producers rely. The Bulgarian "Mavrud", for example, or "Wide Melnishka Vine" became famous far beyond the Balkans. And Macedonian winemakers can boast of autochthonous varieties "Vranets", "Prokupets" or "Zupyanka". Today, these countries can offer lovers of rare wines about two hundred locations for the production of original products.
In order to develop sustainable and ecological tourism, common wine routes are being developed here, involving local enterprises and advertisers in cooperation. A large role in the development of the project is given to the media and social networks. "We welcome every campaign that can contribute to the further development of our good cooperation," Agnes Popowska said.
