Scientists from Salekhard, Tyumen, and Barnaul will conduct the annual ecological monitoring of water quality in the Ob River. The purpose of the expedition is to study the transfer of pollutants between regions from the southern borders of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (YNAO) to the confluence of the Ob River with the Ob Bay. This is reported by the portal of the YNAO government.
"The results of comprehensive monitoring of the Ob River will allow us to build a modern picture of the ecological state of the Ob-Irtysh river basin and prepare scientifically sound proposals for improving the state monitoring of water bodies," the portal quotes the project's scientific supervisor, Professor of Tyumen State University Andrey Soromotin.
As part of the first stage of the expedition, specialists will conduct hydrological measurements in the riverbeds in the southern reaches of the Shuryshkarsky and Yamalsky districts of the YNAO, take water, bottom sediment and bioassay samples from the Ob. They will determine the speed and characteristics of water movement at different depths and establish the chemical composition and quantity of pollutants entering the YNAO with the inflow of water from the southern regions, the message says.
In addition, scientists will assess the degree of self-purification of river water under the influence of biological and physical factors.
The next stage of the expedition is scheduled for autumn - specialists will return to the study sites again to conduct comparative measurements on the Ob.
Comprehensive studies in Yamal have been conducted since 2020 under the project "Environmental Safety of the Ob-Irtysh River Basin".
